The Western Australian School of Mines
The Western Australian School of Mines has been locally and internationally recognised as a provider of excellence in minerals education, research and industry service since 1902. WASM is one of only three national university schools that are endorsed by the Minerals Council of Australia as a preferred national provider of mining engineering education through Mining Education Australia and of Minerals Tertiary Education through the Metallurgical Education Partnership (MEP). You can work as a shotfirer without formal qualifications. You will probably get some informal training on the job. However, there are courses that may assist you in demonstrating competence and gaining employment.
Entry to the course below usually requires Year 10. Contact the institution for full details as requirements may change. You must be at least 18 years of age to meet the Department of Minerals and Petroleum Resources licensing requirements.
The short course is designed to assist attendees to prepare for the Shotfirer's examination set by the Western Australian Schoiol of Mines for the Department of Minerals and Energy of Western Australia's Shotfirer's Certificate. The examination is held at the end of the course. This highly successful course is generally run twice per year and is conducted over four days including field practice day.

Bachelor of Engineering (Civil Engineering)
Civil Engineering involves the application of basic scientific and technological principles to the design and construction of facilities necessary for the welfare of the community. It is concerned with such projects as railways, harbours and docks, road systems, bridges, water supply and wastewater treatment, dams, offshore rigs, tunnels and underground construction, power projects, offshore structures, and commercial and industrial buildings. The effective practice of civil engineering necessitates a strong background in the mathematical and physical sciences, an understanding of the properties of construction materials such as steel, concrete and natural aggregates and an ability to evaluate the performance of structures under variable forms of loading. Many engineering projects require a close working relationship with other groups - planners, architects, environmental scientists - and an appreciation of the impact of civil works on society in terms of both social obligations and finance. The civil engineer also needs training in management of resources, equipment, materials and finance.

The professional qualification for a Mining Engineer is the
degree of Bachelor of Engineering (BEng), which requires four years
of successful full time study. The Institution of Engineers,
Australia (IEAust) and the Australasian Institute of Mining and
Metallurgy (AusIMM) accredit this degree.
The Mining Engineering degree at Curtin's Western Australian School
of Mines is the only program offered in WA that is part of the
Minerals Council of Australia's initiative Mining Education
Australia. In other words, the program is recognised by the peak
mining industry body as being world class (the only other programs
in Australia being those at the University of Queensland and the
University of New South Wales).

Bachelor of Surveying
Surveying is a science-based discipline which is concerned with the measurement, representation and management of data concerning the earth's physical and man-made features. Specialist areas such as cadastral studies, geodesy, photogrammetry, surveying and land information systems, are included within this discipline. Related areas include remote sensing, land development and planning, mine surveying and hydrographic surveying. The discipline has moved into several high technology areas which include satellite positioning, laser scanning, airborne and marine navigation, digital mapping and remote sensing, specialised alignment surveying, analysis of structural deformations, and land and environmental management. Studying modern surveying necessarily calls upon elements from such diverse disciplines as computing, engineering, environmental science, geography, geology, management, mathematics and physics. The Department of Spatial Sciences offers the only comprehensive degree program in surveying in Western Australia. The fourth year of the course incorporates an honours program which can lead directly into the Master of Science (Surveying and Mapping) and the Doctor of Philosophy.

The particular focus of minerals engineering and extractive metallurgy is on the extraction of metals from ores through the application of scientific and engineering principles for gold, iron ore, alumina, coal, mineral sands, nickel, copper and others.
Responsibilities include the selection and/or design and development of the best process to treat a particular ore, the efficient operation of the processing plant to convert ore into metal, and the disposal of waste, all in an environmentally acceptable manner.
